In case you hadn't already heard, Robert Downey Jr. has officially been cast in Jon Favreau's big screen adaptation of Marvel Comic's Iron Man. Bully for him. Bob's come a long way since lampooning his career shaping role in Bret Easton Ellis' Less Than Zero as Julian Wells, a pill popping, smack shooting, trick turning Hollywood brat so bored he has nothing to do but self destruct. Wait, was this a movie, or Bob's life?
At any rate, since Tony Stark (AKA Iron Man) isn't the most noble citizen in the Marvel Universe, casting Downey makes a lot of sense. Audiences won't have to stretch to envision Downey battling his demons in the bottle and the body suit. They'll have a ready-made frame of reference for that.
To be fair, Downey's made some great films of late. One in particular I'd highly recommend is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Val Kilmer. It was written and directed by Shane Black, of Lethal Weapon fame, and successfully recaptures the best buddy-movie moments of that tried and true franchise. I'd be remiss in not mentioning that the hotter-than-porq-gravy Michelle Monaghan also makes an appearance in the film to balance out the testosterone laden presence of Kilmer and Downey (not).
I'm a big Jon Favreau fan. He's pretty much holding a lifetime provisional in terms of movie credit based on his role in shaping the magnificence that is the movie Swingers. But if he craps out another Elf this time out, he's going to have to make another deposit at the bank before I give him his day at the box office.
Not sure what villains Jon has in store for us on this one, but here's to hoping that SunFire and Kim Jong II both make an appearance, and get their asses pummeled.
